Pittsburgh's Finest Prom Closet

I am pleased to announce the first annual "Pittsburgh's Finest Prom Closet" event, to be held April 17 and 18th in the Southside Works, former Ann Taylor Loft store. As a 2009 honoree of "Pittsburgh's Fifty Finest" one of my goals is to raise money for the cystic fibrosis foundation.

This foundation is near and dear to my heart as one of my college sorority sisters has this terminal condition, as does her brother. I actually just returned from a big 40th birthday party for her, we call her Keg and as she is a Lutheran Pastor, she is referred to as Pastor Keg. A great name for a great lady and a true Wittenberg University girl through and through!

The best part about this event is who benefits: the Art Institute of Pittsburgh students who get to run the store, the Pittsburgh high school students who get to purchase prom dresses at great discounts, the Southside Works who will receive loads of busines on these days and of course, the cystic fibrosis foundation, to whom all proceeds will be donated.

We also have a great auction planned with donated restaurant gift cards, manicures, gift baskets from American Eagle/Aerie and the Giant Eagle grocery store. It's going to be a blast. Hope to see you there! Let me know if you have any dresses to donate!

I surely have no time but at seeing a few photos from the Marc Jacobs after party, I was compelled to start blogging.

Seeing the tents setup in Bryant Park last week set off a little quiver in my stomach. And I'm sure it was not the guy drinking double jack and cokes on the 7am flight that lingered.

How the HELL did these guys get into the Marc Jacobs after party? Look at the nice ta-ta's on his tat. and the great 70's hair. I love they are being who they are. I probably would have ended up talking to them all night long.

Waited in a 40 person queue to purchase these little devils, violet, cherry, rose and creme orangerie. Like the juiciest, most succulent rich fruity flowering flavor in your mouth melting on your tongue. And that is with just one taste of the violet.

When in Paris, be like a tourist, and like a local and the best hostess gift you can every bring would be a box from Laduree. {Click there} I think it would go nicely with a glass of bubbly. Oh yes it would . . .

I spent Friday at a Diamond Divas exhibit in Antwerp, Belgium and Monday tasting Mumms and Moet & Chandon at their champagne cellars in Champagne, France. I promise. Everyone I really do.

I LOVE DIAMOND TIARAS! Where else could you see this crown from Princess Marie Bonaparte, where the olive branches symbolize peace and prosperity . . .

And also see Doris Duke's Cartier head crown. Who knew Doris had this much style?

Also on view was the 24 carat yellow Moon of Baroda that Marilyn Monroe wore to the premier of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and Jackie O's brooches, a gorgeous Chanel pendant and a serpent collar which took 2 years to make.

In addition to the glamourous Princess Grace Kelly's engagement rock, er ring and her tiara with jumbo tear drop pearls dangling in betwen the diamonds. It literally made me weak in the knees.

Having to check your bags at the door in a locker, not allowed to bring in a camera, purse, passport, wallet or anything but the locker key and THEN walking through airport security and being wanded kind of freaked me out. But spending over 2 hours at this 3 floor exhibit was such a visual treat and an educational one as well, I cannot imagine a better way to brighten up anyone's life.

Just a few tips when purchasing true champagne:

1. Grand Cru is the way to go.

2. Look for a"vintage" as a label. It's the unique variety selected from a handful of years, and is a different "blend" of the grapes never to be replicated again. A vintage '99 Mumms or 2000 Moet. Try them both!

3. And if you are so lucky to find a family house champage (look for Reims or Epernay, France) I mean no need to pad the LVMH or Pernod-Ricard stock if you don't have to, pick one up for 1/3 the price. It is just wine you know so all should be tasted and not wasted!

Lenny in cat-action! He was absolutely the best cat anyone could want to have. Who had a preference for belgian beer caps, mid-night biting and hide and seek, in addition to loud renditions of "momma" and the abilityt to literally do the catwalk down Professor Avenue in Tremont after the Douglass Street fashion show. Who knew a pound kitty could be so hip. No wonder we called him "Fresh Prince" he definitely was brought from the ghetto to the high life.

Lenny's residences include:
1. 3 story loft in Lemko Hall, Tremont, Ohio
2. 21st floor, 2-story penthouse on the Lake in Lakewood, Ohio where he climbed 2 balconies over to watch an old lady undress herself (naughty boy!)
3. 14th floor Carlyle apartment - a downgrade from the penthouse but he didn't complain
4. Douglass Street boutique where he could be found curled up on Ben Sherman sweaters (sorry guys) or hanging ten on the spiral staircase
5. Grannys! He made the BEST swooshy sound on the tall shag rug with his paws.
6. Pittsburgh, taking the turnpike and the turnpike lady said "tell you kitty Welcome to Pittsburgh!" He also loved chilling in the backyard in the sun with his mommy.

I'm in Milan and had a cappucino this morning that CHANGED MY LIFE.

I'm so glad I don't live here for the quarter because I would be two things:
1. Fat
2. Broke

Homemade pasta and the world's best coffee, I have never had so much espresso! Standing up, in front of the duomo shopping area.
And the cutest, most beautiful shops too.

Went to Lake Como today and bought a Christian Lacroix silk scarve/foulard. YUMMY delicious. I hope that scarf changes my life too. =-)

Enrolling the kiddies in a needlepoint, embroidery course in a week. The woman is herself writing a book, her shop is beautiful. Learning the technique dating from Louis XIV of hand embroidery. Her shop website, Lin et Petits Points Paris explains a bit and showcases the library she has.

Took a tour at Parsons, Paris today. WOW is all I can say. I'm afraid all the girls want to transfer. It was so creative, unreal labyrinth space with loads of light and creative textile design, felting, fabric painting, etc. Thank you to my new contact here, Kim, with her loads of experience and kind ways to introduce me to them, and arrange for such a quick visit.

Did check out Madonna's Gaultier bustier at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Felt sexy in front of Bono's mannequin (gosh I love him) and think David Bowie really had it right. What an ingenue for fashion, characters and music. I developed a new appreciation for him, definitely.

5 days of Fashion

A $20 fresh hot bagel from H & H. Took the train to S. Norwalk, CT for dinner with Fritz Knipschildt http://www.knipschildt.com/flash.html & his assistant Anna saw his shop and got a nice big box of chocolates (beat ya there, Amy!).

Sat in the same chair as Tom Ford, yes, THAT Tom Ford, had sat in days prior in the Mens Fashion Directors office at Bergdorf. My tush will never be the same!

Accidentally met our pilot on the flight from pittsburgh to New York at the coffee bar in the airport.

Spent 3 hours picking out just the perfect fragrance from "Aedes de Venustas" shop. He had us each try on 4 fragrances in different spots and let them sit for an hour to return and have us select the perfect one. Drank champagne at Les Deux while "steeping" our arms.

Bought a pair of VERY high waisted jeans from Intermix. Get ready for the end of crack!

Fell in love many, many times - shoes, jackets, well-dressed men, the breads, boutiques with great vibe, saucy older women in sweater dresses and booties, and the clackety clack of horse hooves lying in bed in the hotel room as the carriage rides proceeded around town.

The Wedding

Attended Rikki's wedding (my full time faculty member) on Saturday night at the Carnegie Museum. Quite literally the elegance enhanced by the biggest flower arrangements and the ladies in full-length gowns was one of the most elegant receptions I've ever attended. Who did the flowers? Large rose blossoms everywhere. And the cake? A torte with pink and chocolate everywhere! I cannot believe her dress was gorgeous. I cannot wait to find a photo from their site.

I went big too, getting my nails and hair done. Shopped at vintage store Eons on Thursday and picked the cutest pillbox hat with ostrich feathers on top. See photo. Fun!

Fashion Week PITTSBURGH

Seems they are all falling in one week. What's that you ask? Fashion shows in Pittsburgh! Heading out to Macy's in Ross Park Mall this evening. Our friend, the lovely Reese Randall, Style Editor at Pittsburgh Magazine (WQED) is holding a fashion show fundraiser. I think she has recruited quite a few newscasters to model. Interested to see the crowd and the fashions.

I am kind of digging the new Macy's as opposed to Kaufmann's. Last year I attended a show there and they were showing Michael Kors shoes. I became immediately obsessed with fur lined clogs. Of course, immediately driving to the Macy's the following day to try on all the pairs. I only like one pair. Yep, the Kors pair which was out of my price range for such a silly high heel clog. Darn it! I continued on the quest all year. Trying on pairs at Marshalls and TJ Maxx too. I sometimes decline to buy into a trend if it's too expensive.

However this year I did snatch up a great pair of low-ankle boots. And by low I mean low top, high heel is super all the time. Cannot wait to wear with black tights and a skirt!

OMG, am I really writing about clothing for this long? Others have to be as obsessed as I am. Must return to work and daydream about the next boot I covet. I"m sure I"ll find something tonight.

I know the last quote sounds sorta snobby, I truly have only been in Kohl's once and that was to buy a gift card for my Grandmother. But I didn't end up buying her one there, I opted for a grocery store gift card. More useful I suspect.

Anyhow, my colleague Norm thinks the quote is appropriate. Since I represent some idea of fashion knowledge for Pittsburgh, is it fitting that I do not shop at Kohl's? I bet even if I did know where it was, I would not stop in to browse. The last company I worked for, we sold product to Kohl's. They all got returned to us because they were burning people, that's a whole other chapter.

Many people express the same wonderment of Vera's decision, however. Shirley, recently shopping for beds, browsed the Vera Wang collection of mattresses. Shirley deduced there was a link to Vera Wang's cache from wedding gowns to the matrimonial mattress. And I suppose there are people who could register for a bed, but that might be kinda weird from your in-laws. But heck, Vera's got china, crystal, and now t-shirts at Kohl's.
